St. Nicholas was a Bishop of Myra who was born in early 3rd century. It is said that his wealthy parents died when he was young. He was follower of Jesus and obeying Jesus words "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," he used all his property and wealth to assist the needy, sick and poor people.
One of the best known stories of St. Nicholas was that he saved 3 poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution. He provided them with the dowry so that they could be married.

One story tells of him helping some sailors that were caught in a dreadful storm all the men were terrified that their ship would sink beneath the giant waves. They prayed to St. Nicholas to help them. Suddenly, he was standing on the deck before them. He ordered the sea to be calm, the storm died away, and they were able to sail their ship safely to port.

There were many stories  of St. Nicholas. Because of his kindness Nicholas was made a Saint. The name Santa Claus evolved from Nick’s Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas.
He died December 6, AD 343. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married. December 6th is still the main day for gift giving and merrymaking in much.

Santa Claus is known as the Father of Christmas. Some people say that Santa lives at the North Pole. In Finland, they say that he lives in the north part of their country called Lapland. But everyone agrees that he travels through the sky on a sledge that is pulled by reindeer, that he comes into houses down the chimney at night and places presents for the children in socks or bags by their beds, in front of the family Christmas tree, or by the fire place.
